Go For 2&5 Unearthing Future Champions School Program

Diving WA would like to invite your school to participate in an exciting program designed to unearth Perth’s next generation of World Class Olympic Divers.

What is the purpose of program?

The Go for 2&5 Unearthing Future Champions Schools Program is designed to more systematically identify and nurture young students who may have the right characteristics to be World Class performers. Traditionally, many students identified through TID programs are often unaware of the natural talent they possess. Through fun and exciting TID testing, we can make them more aware of their hidden sporting talents and provide them with the opportunity to develop.

What is involved?

We are aware of the hectic schedules your school faces; hence our aim is to make this initiative as easy as possible.

A testing schedule with your school will be determined through consultation with our team. We anticipate approximately 1 to 2 days spent at your school, depending on the number of students. We will negotiate with you your preferred days and times for those weeks.

  • The targeted year groups for testing are year’s 2, 3, 4 and 5. If you feel you have some ‘sporty’ students outside these year groups (particularly those with gymnastics backgrounds), we are happy to accommodate them in the testing also. ‘Blanket’ testing across all targeted grades ensures no one is overlooked and that everybody can be part of the initiative.  Remember – some students may not know they possess the talent characteristics to be world class performers, hence why we encourage everyone to have a go.
  • With your permission, we would like to run a small introduction before we start any of the testing. This will cover an introduction into diving and a brief explanation about what we will be doing.
  • The testing is all dry-land based and administered in a circuit type arrangement. We will require 1 hour per class size of 35 students. This also includes warm-up and cool down time. The tests include jumping ability, flexibility, strength and speed.
  • The tests will be administered by elite level diving coaches (all staff have undergone a Working with Children Check and undergone risk assessment). NO ASSISTANCE is required from any of your staff. We do it all!
  • Immediately following testing, each student will receive a certificate of participation and an invitation to come and try diving.
  • Following analysis of your student’s test results, a small number will be invited to participate in a second, more sports specific phase of testing, independent of your school. Children who are selected for Phase 2 will get an invitation after the school testing. (Which will be a terrific achievement!).

Where will the program take place?

It is envisaged that the testing will take place at a suitable location within your school such as the school hall/gymnasium/classroom (i.e. many of the tests are static in nature). These testing sessions can be done during Physical Education classes that are part of your weekly timetable.  Specific arrangements will be organised with your school.

What Costs are involved?

For the Go for 2&5 Unearthing Future Champions Schools Program, there are NO costs for your school’s involvement – just the opportunity for your students to be involved in a very exciting and fun sporting initiative.

Consent to Participate – What is required?

As previously mentioned, all the tests are standard physical fitness tests (on land) that are routinely undertaken in Physical Education classes. Therefore, we anticipate that no parental consent would be required. If you feel consent may be necessary, we have a draft consent form that could be used.

Why choose Diving?

Diving is a unique sport that many students would not otherwise encounter. It requires a combination of athleticism, power and strength along with flexibility, form and grace. As well as being a physical challenge for students, it also provides a psychological one as students are required to build their skills of focus and concentration as they attempt unfamiliar exercises and take them to new heights (literally!). It is a great forum for building self-confidence, resilience and perseverance in your students.

This program has been established for Diving because:

  • Australia is one of the top diving nations in the world winning 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 5 Bronze in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and a Bronze in the 2016 Rio Olympics. This was a brilliant achievement for a very small sport. Underpinning our current champions will ensure future success continues.
  • Western Australia has been strongly represented in recent years at an international level, with Maddison Keeney (Bronze Medal 2016 Rio Olympics, Silver Medals 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games), Teju Williamson (2018 Commonwealth Games) and Nikita Hains (2020 Tokyo Olympics). This shows that there is great potential for diving in WA and you could be involved in helping us find our next diving superstars!

What happens next?

To reserve your school’s place in this exciting initiative, please contact the team on (08) 6424 9090 or info@wadiving.com.au.

We thank you in anticipation of your keen involvement in unearthing Perth’s future “Diving Diamonds”.  We look forward to hearing from your school.

We can also help schools coordinate an excursion/outdoor PE class for your students to attend our training facility at HBF Stadium, Mt Claremont to put their skills to the test on the boards! There would be costs involved for this option. Please contact us to discuss.
