Tony Ally – Head Coach

A three time Olympian and former European Champion, Tony Ally brings decades of international experience and a powerful story of resilience to his role as Head Coach and Program Manager at Diving WA. Tony began diving at a young age and quickly emerged as one of Britain’s most promising athletes, winning his first senior national title at just 12 years old. He went on to become the first British male diver to win a European Championship title, claiming gold in the 3m springboard at the 1999 Championships in Istanbul, where he also secured a bronze in synchronised diving.

Tony’s competitive record spans more than two decades at the highest level. He represented Great Britain at three Olympic Games, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, achieving finals appearances and a top five finish in synchronised springboard with long time partner Mark Shipman. He also competed in five Commonwealth Games from 1990 to 2006, collecting four medals, and had the honour of being Team Great Britian's flag bearer at the Melbourne 2006 Opening Ceremony. His European triumph, Olympic performances and sustained excellence marked him as a trailblazer for British diving, helping drive improvements in athlete support and professionalism within the United Kingdom’s high performance system.

Following his retirement in 2007, Tony transitioned into coaching, serving as Great Britain's National Synchro coach before becoming Assistant Head Coach at Sheffield Diving.  He later moved to Western Australia to take up a leadership role with Diving WA. Since joining the organisation, he has led the refinement of the state’s performance and coaching framework, strengthening connections between grassroots programs, emerging talent pathways and elite level preparation. Tony now plays a central role in building a collaborative, modern and athlete centred coaching culture across Western Australia, developing both divers and coaches through a philosophy grounded in technical mastery, empowerment and continuous improvement.

Tony’s lived experience, from early achievements through profound personal challenges and international success, underpins the performance culture he now helps shape at Diving WA. His leadership aligns strongly with the organisation’s values of Respect, Empowerment and Excellence, ensuring every diver and coach is supported with the mentorship, opportunity and development needed to reach their full potential. His career accomplishments are complemented by a legacy of resilience, innovation and a deep commitment to athlete development.
