School Sport WA A Diving Success!

Published Mon 28 Aug 2023

School Sports WA sent a small team of our fabulous divers to the School Sports Australia Diving Championship last week, 21 to 27 August 2023. Held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, teams of 10 to 19 year olds from New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria and of course Western Australia, competed to win the title of School Sport Australia Champion.

This event holds the traditional springboard, platform and synchronised diving events as well as fun knockout competitions. The mixed state team competition often proves a favourite, as it builds friendships and camaraderie with other states, creating a fantastic atmosphere amongst athletes during the weeklong event. This year was no exception. Led by coach Kim Hynynen-Furler, team morale was exceptionally high, which reflected in the results. Sharon Min Oo, who attended the event with her daughter Hannah, said,” Our kids held the flag high for WA. They definitely did the state proud!”. Sharon said the competition was “very exciting”, particularly referring to the three-way tie for first place in the Girls 15 years Knockout competition, which resulted in Isabella Galvao bringing home Gold for WA.

Some of the SSWA team provided their very valuable judging skills to contribute to the smooth running of the School Sports Australia Championship. Thank you to Hannah Min Oo, Hannah Harris, and Sharon Min Oo. SSWA certainly did well contributing judges, for such a small team.

Saturday, the teams had the opportunity to let down their hair and have fun outside the pool. The states attended an excursion to Madam Tussauds, Sea Life Aquarium and Wild Life Zoo. This culminated in team WA parents, athletes and coach, having a team dinner on Darling Harbour – finishing up with a spectacular fireworks display over the Harbour.

When referring to her daughter, Hannah’s, take on the competition, Sharon said “(it was a) really good experience – one of the best she’s had!”

Congratulations to the SSWA Diving team for a fantastic competition!  Photo's are on the SSWA Facebook page and DWA Instagram.
